Welcome to KAD Dental- We Do Things Differently Here
As someone who has been practicing throughout the country for many years- I have practiced dentistry in the east, central, south and north- I can attest to the fact that as dentists, sometimes the primary concern is speed and profit over healthcare. The aim is to see as many patients in as short a time as possible and so dentistry can feel very much impersonal and like a factory mill.
Slow. Down.
This has always been my way of practicing, which sometimes did not sit well with my seniors. I made a disclaimer that I move "slowly" to patients and practices alike. The result? Patients who would always ask to be seen by me, precisely because they felt heard and cared for. The initial 1 to 2 visits with a patient should last at least an hour in my opinion. We are treating real, human beings, not just teeth. I want to hear why you're here, what makes you self-conscious, all the details about the pain you feel and when it started. It is only when we have a full picture, we can accurately diagnose and treat. And once that is covered, the dentistry itself moves quite quickly. We're on the same page- we work as a team and not as opposition.
Dentistry is a lot about education. And patients understand and appreciate when you take the time to explain things to them and respect them as a person. While we may have more knowledge of dentistry, we have to remember, they ultimately know themselves. This approach has also allowed me to be able to confidently dismiss patients who I know do not align with my treatment style. Not everyone teaches or learns the same way, and, if I truly believe a patient may benefit better from seeing someone else, I am comfortable to say so. I do not see these moments as losses so much as I see them as efficiency- no one's time is wasted and no one is left feeling misunderstood or aggrieved.
When we get down to it, slow and steady will always be the way to go. My goal is to build a team that understands the value in this approach and a community who appreciates the time given. For every patient who tells us, "I never felt heard before or like I was allowed to ask questions", we know without a doubt that we are on the right track. And to any dentist who practices differently, that's fine as well. Your people will find you, just as ours do.
If this sounds like your kind of environment, Welcome to KAD! We can't wait to meet you.
